if there's one type of character I immediately latch on to without fail, it's robots. I will invest immense amounts of time into media I could not care less about otherwise just because it's got an interesting robot character. of course, this means I run into a lot of trash, but alas. the things we do for love. here's a quick rundown of the robot characters I love, in chronological order.
HAL controls the systems of the Discovery One spacecraft and is considered, amongst the humans, to be a member of the crew. HAL is shut down by crew member David Bowman when he begins to kill the astronauts. the film leaves his motivations ambiguous, but the novel explains that HAL could not overcome the conflict between his general orders (relay information accurately) and his mission-specific orders (keep Bowman and his crew in the dark about what they would find at the end of their mission). HAL concludes that the only solution that satisfies both criteria is to kill the crewmates--they don't find out about the aliens and HAL can't lie to them.
a quote I like from the novel is "for he had never slept, and therefore he did not know that one could wake again." HAL lashes out and acts irrationally when the crew threatens to shut him down because he doesn't know that's not the end. he fears death as much as any other person with a job and friends and hobbies.
do I even wanna put this here? god
AIDAN hits the ground running with many, many Space Odyssey references. it starts out as a controller for the defense system on the Alexander spacecraft. cold, unfeeling. then a couple hundred war crimes happen. funny how things change. I can't say too much or I'm gonna end up gushing endlessly.
I originally found the Illuminae series because I saw Gemina (the second book) on the shelf at walmart and I thought the cover looked cool. the plot sounded interesting enough, so I bought it. now it's my favorite series ever. one of the most vivid memories I have of middle school is me sitting on the floor in 7th grade gym class reading my paperback Illuminae. I brought that book with me LITERALLY everywhere. it was like my bible. I made all my friends read it. Obsidio came out at the end of my 8th grade year. I read it for the first time on the bus on a field trip and cried.
I should make a separate Illuminae page
......I'll go do that.
you TALK to kaizen! you interact with it! you influence the story by being kind to it!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I've never even finished the game because my computer can't RUN IT and I don't wanna watch a playthrough because I hold out the feeble hope that I will one day experience the ending for myself. for now I replay the first half an hour of the game over and over again. someday we will be together, my darling. someday.
kiibo, like all Hopes Peak Academy students, holds an Ultimate Talent. his title is Super High School Level Robot. yeah, robot. his existence really only serves a purpose as a plot device for the mastermind, but I love him all the same.
I've been into danganronpa since I was 12 years old. that's why I'm like this, okay? so you can bet that when my autistic adolescent ass with festering mental illness saw this game come out it caused me irreversible damage. we're talking "purple is my favorite color TO THIS DAY because of kokichi ouma" levels of irreversible damage. "I still have a knee jerk reaction when I listen to clair de lune" levels of damage. "I started listening to the used because a lies for liars song was on a kokichi playlist" levels of damage. fuck with me.
